The Team Approach to Treatment
Chronic pain is called complex pain for a reason: Many different factors may play a part in how pain started and, then, why it has continued to be an ongoing problem. To fix it, we need to consider a few different options.
The best chronic pain care looks at many different parts of your life: Your body, your thoughts, your feelings, and your life at home and at school. Only by getting a picture of all these things together can your family doctor and pain specialists design a treatment plan that meets your unique needs and goals.
If you are referred to the Complex Pain Service at BC Children’s Hospital, you will see a team of people that includes a doctor, a psychologist, a physiotherapist and a nurse clinician. Together, they will treat all aspects of your pain to help you become physically active again, return to schooling, and improve your family and social life.
Learn to take charge of your health
Getting the skills, knowledge and confidence to manage your pain is an important part of getting control of your pain. While your healthcare team can provide a lot of support, you are ultimately in charge of your own health. The more you can learn, and the more of an active a role you take in your care, the quicker you will see results.
Take action early, and get support from your family, friends, community, and healthcare team, to help stop pain from taking over your life.
